    Winged yam is a deciduous vine that can reach a length of thirty feet- It produces a large root crop of edible subterranean tubers (yams) which are an important starchy food source in many tropical to sub-tropical areas around the globe. Dried to make flour, cooked like potatoes, has many uses. Also called ubi, used in the phillipines to make sweets and desserts.

    The left side of the first image is an example of the bulbils you will receive, they are brown on the outside and if you scrape the surface skin you will see a purple layer . The inside is white with a purple ring- the yam that grows when you plant these bulbils is all purple on the inside.
    On the right of the first photo is the purple root yam that grows from the bulbils. you harvest this root, cook, and consume .The last photo is what it looks like when boiled
    You will receive small to medium sized bulbils. Grow large edible true yams (you will need to cook the root before consuming) from these aerial tubers (bulbils). You don’t have to dig the root up until your ready to use them.

    The D. alata has bulbils that are dark brown with a variety of shapes and sizes.
    Plants take 7 - 10 months to mature a crop

    In tropical areas, plants go dormant for about three months at the end of the rainy season. In more temperate frost-free areas, plants lose foliage and go dormant in winter.

    I can’t control the sprouting conditions of the bulbils once they’re in your hands - but feel free to message me any questions for troubleshooting- keep in mind they can take a while to sprout (3-12 weeks!) so patience is key.
